I’m a 17 year old white guy living in middle class America. I’ve never exactly been a supporter of feminism because that kind of thing has never really affected me personally. I don’t notice it and I don’t care about it. But in nine minutes this video has made what is truly a serious problem extremely apparent. Those “why I need feminism” posts or those slut-shaming or rape culture campaigns never convince me of anything. But this video actually did I think.

Just treat it as a job, a normal love scene. I’m not going to fall in love with you, and I don’t want you to really have sex with me. You’re not my type.’ So he agreed to do the scene.”

Tony Leung: “[Wong Kar-wai] gave me a fake script. Originally my character wasn’t gay - his father was. In my script, the father dies in Argentina and I go there and find out he had a lover, who is Leslie. So we go to Argentina and we spend six weeks learning Spanish and the tango. And after that, Kar-wai says, ‘I think it would be much more interesting if your role is gay.’ I was surprised, but not angry. We start shooting the next day - and the first scene is a love scene.”

I had a bunch of ideas for what that song could be, but I didn’t feel it was right for me to give Ryan a song to give to Michelle. And so I gave him a challenge and let him pick out a song for her. Ryan has a great taste and the song he picked out was You and Me by Penny and the Quarters. And I thought it was just great. So I told Ryan to keep the song a secret, and never share it with Michelle until we were shooting. So they day came to shoot the scene, Ryan had the song in his back pocket, and we captured the real moment where one person gives an other person the gift of music. The gift, because it came from Ryan, was personal. Michelle was touched deeply by it. What happens on the screen is a real, living and breathing, intimate moment.
